The case for Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton is strong. Fighting for us. No matter how tired and weary and collapsing and decrepit she may be feeling at any particular moment, her lust for power so that she can help us (and the kids) will keep her valiantly crawling feebly forward. That’s the story and I’m sticking to it.

Dem chair and hack Donna Brazile says on TV in an I-don’t-even-believe-me, rattling-it-off-of-a-3×5-card tone of voice: “Every time I hear Hillary Clinton, I’m always inspired by her.” This is about as credible as Obama telling a bunch of grade-schoolers, “You inspire me.” (They laughed in his face.) So, super-credible.

Form should follow function, not slap it upside the head

Filed under: Media and journalism,Television — davidmbrowndotcom @ 6:19 am

An injunction of style should be “First, do no harm.” That is, don’t gratuitously detract from clear presentation of the content, as a cable show on interrogations does by introducing a persistent “cool” spit or stutter seemingly every tenth frame. What is the electronic spitting supposed to convey? Nothing. It’s supposed to distract the viewer from the starkness of the setup, which usually consists of two people in an interrogation room. But if the drama of the interrogation is not interesting despite the bareness of the setup, the show shouldn’t have been produced to begin with. The electronic spitting doesn’t distract from only any possibly weak aspects of the show. It distracts from everything, indiscriminately. It’s just an annoying distraction.

You can watch TV during the collapse of Western civilization

Filed under: Society and culture,Television — davidmbrowndotcom @ 11:13 pm

If you compare the very best television shows of today to the very best television shows of thirty or forty years ago, there’s no comparison. The old best shows are crud compared to very best shows available today. One reason, at least, is the rise of cable: the evasion of boneheaded Puritan censorship it has permitted and the pressure of competition it has brought to bear. The basic possibilities of story and character didn’t need to evolve; literature and even movies were old by the 1970s and 1980s, with many brilliant classics to emulate. But that heritage was rarely fully exploited. It was thought that all TV needed was a formula and a few likeable and charismatic characters that people would enjoy seeing again next week.

The shows that made an impression on me as a kid were stuff like “Star Trek,” in reruns; “The Avengers,” in reruns (Emma Peel seasons especially); “The Brady Bunch,” “Six Million Dollar Man,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Mission Impossible”; later, “Dallas” (with a story arc continuing from episode to episode, but in meandering and endless soap-opera fashion). Not all of that once-compulsively watchable fare is unwatchable now, but it’s all pretty thin. “The Prisoner,” to a lesser extent early “Columbo,” and maybe a few others I don’t know about tried harder.

Production values have advanced, but above all the scripts have advanced. Was there anything way back when as compelling as “Lost,” “24,” “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” or the rebooted “Battlestar Galactica” (surely not the original “Battlestar Galactica”)? I’m not gainsaying the allure of megawatt star power, just saying the crowd-hypnotizing stars of those days would have much better stuff to work with if they could have been stars today.

Hence, even if Obama and his ilk succeed in destroying the economy and plunging America and the world into a new Dark Age, all is not lost. And that’s really the moral for today. So long as we can hold on to our digital TVs and keep a remnant of the interwebs running, and keep enough dry goods in hidden storage units to last a decade or so, we who survive will enjoy access to a fairly large backlog of truly fine and entertaining television, large enough to sporadically distract us from our despair as our once great civilization sputters, careens, clanks and hiccups into oblivion. Problem solved.

Round-robin cop-show exposition

I don’t watch the cop shows, and after one minute of “Law and Order” I find that I also don’t want to take the lessons in exposition informing the script writers of cop shows.

In the episode I saw a minute of, a young Asian guy cop at the station flourishes a promotional sheet produced by the organization that the crew is investigating and rattles off a brief explanation of the group’s purpose. In the very next moment, before anybody can scratch his nose or comment on the weather or complain about how stupid the organization is, a young white lady cop looks down at a computer screen where a further-information-providing web page is already open and says, “Okay, here we go…,” as if the page has only now swum into view, coincidentally just in time to enable her to smoothly expand upon her colleague’s brief preliminary report. Would it really be so boring to listen to any one character convey info for more than 15 seconds before the explanatory ball is tossed in rehearsed segue to somebody else?

Oprahfication

Filed under: Media and journalism,Society and culture,Television — davidmbrowndotcom @ 3:55 am

Oprah Winfrey’s unwatchable talk show is finally, finally, finally OVER.

Reports of its long-delayed demise yielded little in the way of critical assessment of the show, plenty in the way of somberly reflective heralding of all Oprah incarnated. She became America’s mommy, she jumped up and down, she gave away cars to audience members. What more is there to say? Phenom-ville.

Never give up. Never lose hope. Never surrender. Because eventually you, too, will find the online reprint of a 1998 National Review article by Mark Steyn, posted at National Review Online to commemorate the faux-honest confessionalism that is the hallmark of the Oprah era.

Oprah’s program was a kinder and gentler version of other let-it-all-hang-out, let-the-bullshit-flow talkfests. You emote, I emote, you’re okay, I’m okay, whatever we may do or say.

Being not infallible, only seeming so, Oprah can screw up too. But when Oprah sins, it’s about having lapsed in the bogus-compassion department, as when she got mad at some memoirist who, it turned out, had made up a lot of the stuff he wrote in his memoir; then repented for having so sternly reprimanded him.

Although I have not done the research, I suspect that few of the blatant liars she showcased were thus chastised. Almost none–or, more probably, none–of the persons who blatantly babbled about things about which they should not have been blatantly babbling on national television were told that they shouldn’t be doing that sort of thing. Of course, Oprah also interviewed serious and interesting people with serious and interesting, legitimately public purposes. But it was the mommy-to-the-nation thing that was her stock-in-trade.

Steyn:

What can we learn from this new confessional? Mostly that, unlike the old confessional, it uses the appearance of personal honesty as a form of evasion. By 1992, when Oprah went to Los Angeles for a post-riot update, her guests—the cream of the neighborhood’s pillagers and looters—had mastered the buzzwords of the format. “I looted,” said one, stabbing the air emphatically, “because I felt it was a cause that had to be met.” Amid all the hapless Korean storekeepers there was a black businessman whose shop had also been razed. The chief looter had a ready answer: “All businesses were burnt, of course, in a situation that was perpetuated therein, you know, in a situation, we cannot, uh, say, okay, we are not going to have a black business burnt.”

In olden days, your average looter preferred to give the media a wide berth and melt back into the anonymity of the crowd, but now the prospect of adding a second string to his brick as TV’s Mister Riot more than outweighs any fear that appearing on a coast-to-coast talk show might prejudice any forthcoming trial. Producers are, after all, easily impressed: “Hey, get this guy! Not only can he pillage, he can also say ‘perpetuated therein.’ ” But, in the years since, the Oprah form of public discourse has been perpetuated throughout: O.J. uses it, and the Duchess of York, and President Clinton. “Personal honesty” is the best way to dodge personal responsibility.

I’m still puzzling over that “second string to his brick” metaphor, but I wouldn’t go on national television to whine about it. I would not go on “Oprah” to tell Oprah and the nation my “problems.” My life has been perfect from Day One.

Well, there has been one blight. That friggin’ show! But now it’s gone. I no longer have to stab frantically at my remote control when I accidentally surf into some gooey installment of it. Thank you, Oprah. You changed my life!

“Twilight Zone”: “One for the Angels”

Wow, I didn’t expect to enjoy so much the second episode of the original “Twilight Zone,” “One for the Angels” (1959), about a small-time pitchman trying to deflect Mr. Death. It’s a two-man show, and it’s the two actors (Ed Wynn and Murray Hamilton) who make the sale. Thanks again, Netflix.

It’s okay to be a Paladin

In a well-written but cynical article about about “Have Gun–Will Travel,” novelist Alan Vanneman writes:

It’s a well-known fact that a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do. Rarely was the code masculine defined with so broad a brush yet so severe a regard for honor’s finest punctilio than in the U.S. during the 1950s. The culprit, if one is needed, was a shy kid from Oak Park, Illinois named Ernest Hemingway who somehow convinced himself that a man wasn’t a man unless he combined the unlikely and unstable virtues of Geronimo, the Fourth Earl of Chesterfield, and Gustave Flaubert.

Naturally, poor Ernesto ended his days by blowing his brains out, but the real damage was done long before. Ernie’s beard, his boozing, his wives, his wenches, his boxing matches, his lion hunts, and his endless braggadocio became the stuff that dreams are made of for generations of aspiring American writers, most especially the kids who came out of World War II anxious to trade in their M-1’s for a typewriter and a shot at the big time.

A classic instance of machismo a la Ernest is the fifties “adult western” “Have Gun, Will Travel,” now making its appearance on DVD. Have Gun, Will Travel starred the very existentialist Richard Boone as “Paladin” — “a knight without armor in a savage land,” as the show’s theme song had it.

Oh yes, “naturally”! What else is any man of ability, intelligence, courage and self-confidence to do but descend into braggadocio, alcoholism and suicide! Perhaps there are a few salient details omitted in this recap of Hemingway’s character and life?

Are we really supposed to believe that a man like Paladin, the hero of the late 50s, early 60s western “Have Gun–Will Travel,” must end by blowing his brains out like Ernest Hemingway? That strength, courage, integrity and skill are intrinsically self-defeating, especially when attended by a zest for the finer things in life?

For all its strengths, I think “Have Gun Will Travel” could be better done on many counts. If only every worthy show had infinite resources at its disposal.

But I can’t muster Alan Vanneman’s above-it-all ironic contempt for a hero and a show that he seems to like despite his impulse to cordon himself off from any complicity with its dramatization of moral and manly ideals. Vanneman seems to assume that the fact that fictional myth-making cannot be taken literally means that the moral ideals it expresses cannot be be achieved in reality in any practical form, no matter how responsive to and reflective of the values and virtues that do make our lives possible and worth living. Would it be better if men and women did not seek to be well-read, responsible and honorable—if we all stopped sipping wine and stopped trying to learn new skills and stopped partaking of our cultural inheritance—if we always ran like the wind from any great challenge?

Note to Jonah Goldberg re “Blood Was Every Color”

Filed under: Language and grammar,Society and culture,Television — davidmbrowndotcom @ 12:00 am

So this is the way you wanted to end your interesting article on group moral relativism in “Sons of Anarchy” in particular and American culture in general: “And what else are you going to watch on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m.?” Offering this kind of flippant and trivial irrelevancy as a concluding thought is an example of what one might call literary relativism. Of course, mentioning the schedule for the show that is the subject of an article encouraging readers to watch the show is not irrelevant as a point of information. But it’s off-putting as the closing sentence of a piece with a serious literary-philosophical theme because it is irrelevant to that theme. Moreover, the line dates the article in the way that mentioning the schedule earlier in the piece would not have dated it. The very last sentence of any work is given special stress, an extra weight, in virtue of that position. And this is the first sentence it would make sense to lop in any reprint of the article after the show has been rescheduled or ended its run.
